You’ve discovered a passion and want to make money off of it. You’ve heard of the “blood money” in technology, but when it comes to employment, you can’t seem to make the connection. So how do we fund this technology through employment? In other words, how can we go from tech bro/sis to ballers?

Hi Techie: Greetings from Techies & Tech. We demystify technology and explore difficulties that nobody seems to bring up. We’ll dispel myths about how to land tech jobs. In contrast to traditional 9–5 jobs, finding employment in the tech industry is significantly simpler. Some tech jobs are on-site, but most are remote. In either case, working in technology gives you the freedom to work at your own pace and pursue your passions while earning a living. However, newcomers (including “agba” techies) appear to suffer while trying to land these career prospects. However, the following items may just be able to aid in securing ‘the bag’.

Your lack of expertise in your subject could be a significant roadblock. You can be learning a lot but not performing enough practical work. Put your learning into practice by getting your hands dirty. In case you didn’t know, talking about your abilities isn’t as effective as really exercising them. You are constructing your portfolio while getting your hands dirty. Don’t be too hard on yourself or anticipate that your first project will be complex and flawless. In actuality, hiring managers choose straightforward tasks that highlight your rudimentary understanding of your specialty. Your first project might just be you showcasing your technical expertise for filters, groups, and average functions if you’re an Analyst skilled in SQL. It doesn’t have to be you dealing with NULLS. Just show you understand the foundation.

You don’t appear capable of what you can. Hey, you could be competent, but your internet presence isn’t exactly impressive. Here’s a fun exercise: use a search engine to look up oneself for one minute (Google yourself). Done? What you saw, did you like? Would you be hired if you worked as a recruiter? This is the realm of technology, exactly. Your internet reputation is taken into account during the employment process because you might not have the luxury of a face-to-face interview. I have to look for you and look for evidence that you are indeed capable of what you claim. Are your projects shared on social media? How do you expect others to know you exist if not?Do you have a clear description? From the moment I open your page, I need to know what you’re into. Recruiters use social media sites like LinkedIn. We’ll go into more detail on why many individuals uninstall/run away from the app in a later post. If you want to be given opportunities, you must present yourself in the best possible way. I’ve been hired for jobs I didn’t apply for simply because the recruiting CEO thought my LinkedIn page was beautiful and I had a well-optimized profile. Visit my profile on LinkedIn.

Volunteering is really important. You’ve probably heard a lot about how some employers refuse to make entry-level positions entry-level. This is so that businesses can hire people who can function well under minimal or no supervision. You can gain free experience and perhaps open doors for long-term employment by volunteering for businesses. Working for a tech company is not synonymous with volunteering. locate your niche. Consider volunteering in a hospital if you want to delve deeper into health data. Go all out and be passionate. By doing this, you increase your understanding of that industry and acquire free experience that keeps you from being solely entry-level. I entered the field of content strategy through volunteer work without any prior experience. More of my learning took place on the job. I took this action because it matched my personal objectives and the Company’s mission of empowering women in the tech industry. I was able to gain other employment opportunities by merely volunteering thanks to this position, which led to my promotion to the youngest head of the social media team.

Don’t be afraid to initiate contact. Your next job might be just around the corner if you are ready to take this risk. If you already have a company in mind, look for employees there and inquire about their experience joining the organization. Apply the knowledge you’ve learned, network with senior executives at the organization you want, be clear about your goals, and sell yourself. Be prepared, accept a negative response, but follow up with them occasionally. You’ll be shocked to learn that few employment openings are advertised.

Having a bad resume is another crucial element that damages practically every new employee. Your CV must be organized and comprehensive. Your resume needs to be customized for the position you’re applying for. Here is an example of one of my resumes for a position in data or finance (CLICK HERE). Despite being an outdated template, it is thorough and contains only information that is pertinent to that market.

That was a lot to process. Breathe deeply and trust that you can handle it. Finding a job is not that difficult. Positioning and smart branding are the key factors. Ivyelebesunu@gmail.com is the email address to contact me if you need any assistance.

There’s space for you in the tech space. Your ‘bag’ is patiently waiting for you to grab it. You’ve got this, Techie.
